What is Explosion Proof?
When companies test equipment for performance ratings and manufacturing worthiness (such as Underwriters Laboratories - UL), they also specify whether or not a piece of equipment is flame retardant, how many amps it draws at startup, etc., etc. One rating is Class 1, Division 2, which some people refer to as "Explosion proof," meaning the unit will not cause or create sparks and/or generate an explosion. This unit has received such a rating.
Why "Explosion Proof?"
Using a desiccant dehumidifier in combustible areas is a concern among many industries. Dehumidifiers are used on "volatile job sites" for many reasons. In years past, all work stopped while dehumidifiers were placed on or near combustible areas, such as an off shore oil rig. Now, with a dehumidifier rated as an explosion proof unit, workers can utilize dehumidified air on their application without a costly shut down on the off shore rig.
